About Best Gold and Silver Investment

Jaynous Kool, founder of Best Gold and Silver Investment

Hi, I'm Jaynous Kool, the founder of Best Gold and Silver Investment.

I've bought and held precious metals for more than ten years. I held through bull runs, sharp corrections and long quiet stretches when nothing much happened. I'm also an angel investor in early-stage startups. That side of my investing has taught me a lot about risk: some bets pay off, many don't, and money you can't afford to lose shouldn't ride on any single one.

I started this site because buying gold and silver is simpler than it looks, but the costs are easy to miss. Many pages about buying metal are written by the people selling it. They rarely explain the premium you pay on the way in, the lower price you get on the way out, or what storage, insurance and taxes add up to. I wanted one place that explains all of it in plain English, including the downsides.

What you'll find here

  • Buying basics: coins vs. bars, the most common coins, and why collector coins cost so much more.
  • Prices: what the spot price is, what a fair premium looks like, and how to check a quote yourself.
  • Where to buy: online dealers, coin shops, banks and the US Mint, and how to check any of them.
  • Storage and insurance: keeping metal at home, in a bank box or in a private vault, and what your insurance really covers.
  • Taxes and selling: how the IRS taxes gold and silver when you sell, what dealers report, and how to get a fair price.
  • Scam warnings: the red flags US regulators warn about, fake coins and bars, and the courier scam aimed at older Americans.

How I think about gold and silver

Gold and silver can be a useful thing to own, but they aren't a whole plan. They pay no income, cost money to buy, sell, store and insure, and can go years without gaining value. Nothing on this site predicts prices or promises returns. If you're deciding how much of your savings belongs in metals, or thinking about gold in an IRA, our sister site bestretirementinvestment.com covers that.

How the guides are made

Every guide is researched from primary sources, like IRS publications, the US Mint, state revenue departments and warnings from US regulators such as the CFTC, FINRA, the FTC and the FBI, and those sources are linked on the page. Prices are shown with the date we checked them. I work with a small editorial team on research and writing, and I review each guide before it goes live. You can read more in our Editorial Policy.

How this site makes money

Some pages may link to bullion dealers. If you buy through one of those links, we may earn a fee. That never changes what we write, and we don't sell metal ourselves. Full details are in our Affiliate Disclosure.
